On 28 and 29 June 2024, the University of Tunis organized the first multidisciplinary doctoral courses under the theme “Cross-View on Digital Humanities”.

This meeting brought together PhD students, teachers and researchers from various backgrounds, within the Higher Institute of Management in Tunis (ISGT) and the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences in Tunis (FSHST). The main objective was to explore the rapidly expanding field of digital humanities.

The objectives of doctoral studies: academic and human exchange

The organizers – in the framework the RAQMYAT project – highlighted the importance of a modern, digital-based doctoral education. The discussions highlighted the need for transdisciplinarity and openness to meet the growing challenges of research. International experts addressed topics such as the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on human and social science (SHS) research, offering exciting perspectives for the future of the field.

The importance of interdisciplinarity

The round tables and doctoral workshops explored three main axes: methodology, interdisciplinarity and employability. Prof. Ahmed Khouaja introduced the discussions by referring to the digital strategy of the University of Tunis, which is being developed as part of the RAQMYAT project.

The PhD students were made aware of the challenges and opportunities that digital technology can bring to their research and future careers. The presence of institutions such as the Student Entrepreneur Cluster has strengthened the link between research and entrepreneurship, encouraging participants to value their scientific work in innovative ways.

Towards more practical and innovative research

Beyond theoretical reflections, the doctoral students focused on the acquisition of practical skills. Participants had the opportunity to discover tools such as bibliometry, which facilitates the identification of new avenues for publication and research.

Specialized workshops also allowed some 20 PhD students to present their work to a jury of researchers from different disciplines, creating promising synergies for the future.

A bright future

The two days marked a successful first step for the University of Tunis, which is already planning to renew this initiative. By promoting digital humanities and equipping doctoral students with the skills necessary for their professional integration, these doctoral candidates are paving the way for a modern doctoral training adapted to the challenges of the 21st century.

Thus, these doctoral conferences not only allowed a fruitful exchange between the participants, but they also laid the foundations for a broader reflection on the future of university research in Tunisia, through a modernisation of academic practices and better integration of digital tools.
